Blackie
The Blackie mango, also known as the Jamaican Black Mango, is a popular variety in Jamaica. This mango is distinctive for its color, as it does not turn red when ripe but rather remains a light green-yellow. The fruit is smaller compared to other Jamaican mango varieties and has a firm, fiberless flesh. Its flavor is unique, characterized by a less sweet, more tangy taste, making it a preferred choice for those who enjoy a milder mango flavor. The Blackie mango is particularly suitable for people with diabetes due to its lower sugar content.
The Blackie mango tree is known for its resilience and adaptability, thriving in Jamaica's tropical climate. The mangoes are typically harvested when mature green and ripen to their distinctive color and flavor profile. The season for Blackie mangoes generally spans from May to July, coinciding with the peak of the mango season in Jamaica.
Most Blackie mangoes are small and green, however some do ripen with a kiss of yellow, therefore I am not sure why it’s called Blackie mango. They are not as sweet and juicy as Stringy mangoes, but have a slight advantage over it’s counterpart…they have little or no fiber. Blackie mangoes do vary in size and some are small enough to fit in my mouth.
Joy L. Campbell:
This sweet treat is as widely known as and sometimes smaller than hairy mangoes, but is no less sweet. The skin is palatable (although sometimes prone to black spots) and every mango specialist can attest to eating every bit of flesh off a blackie. Since their skin is most often green, and sometimes yellowish, it’s challenging to work out how the black mango got its name.
